fantastic opportunity of photographing one of my favourite artists, J Mascis,
founding member for the American pioneering
alternative rock group Dinosaur Jr. J was performing his solo show at the Toff in Town, Melbourne as part of his
Australian tour to promote his latest brilliant solo album Several Shades of
Why.

Supporting World Vision
I am proud to be supporting World Vision with the release of this calendar. All profits from sales will be donated to World Vision’s Haiti Earthquake Emergency Appeal.
In January 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti, in the south of the country, devastating its capital Port-au-Prince. It’s estimated that over 250,000 lives were lost with a further 3 million people affected and a million people left homeless. Many of these people, including women and children are still living in makeshift camps across the country and in slums on the outskirts of the capital Port-au-Prince with limited access to basic humanitarian services, and disease is now the biggest concern. Cholera is now an epidemic in a large part of the country and funds are urgently required to prevent further spread.

Set up by a good friend of mine and 2008 Mrs Australia, Danielle Larche, Project Dovetail is a non profit children's organisation that supports children who have become disadvantaged through parental abandonment, social situation, illness, location and financial struggle.
Through Project Dovetail we adopt an orphanage or home for abandoned children in some of the world’s most needing countries, and provide them with essential items, clothing, school supplies, toys and access to social services.
We also support and work closely with local children's support agencies, and plan events for disadvantaged children within Australian communities.
Project Dovetail runs a series of 'Kids Day's Out', which give local disadvantaged children and their families the opportunity to spend a day taking part in fun activities and events, that they would otherwise not have the opportunity to do so.

Semi Finalist - 2009 Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year CompetitionThe judging has been completed and for the 2nd year running, one of my images entered into the 2009 Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year award reached the semi final round.
The competition, which is run jointly by the Natural History Museum, London and the BBC Wildlife Magazine is one of the most prestigious and sought after awards for any nature photographer worldwide.
The image of Grazing Camels was taken on the road to the Saharan Desert village of Ksar Ghilane, Tunisia.
This image is available as a black and white Limited Edition Signature Series print in the Tunisia gallery - Ref ID - SSB 027.

New Images Released - Uluru-Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon National Parks
New Images Released – Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park and Kings Canyon National Park, Northern territory.
I have recently released a series of images taken on a trip to Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park and Kings Canyon National Park in central Australia.
Both National parks abound in beauty, with amazing wildlife and flora and spectacular rock formations such as Uluru (Ayres Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and gorges of Watarrka (Kings Canyon), it really was a photographers dream.
A selection of these images have been released as part of my Signature Series Limited Edition print collection, with each print limited to 150.

My latest collection of images from a recent three week photo shoot in the amazing east African countries of Uganda and Tanzania are now complete and available to view and purchase online.
Both countries offered up endless photographic opportunities, from the mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Virunga Volcanoes in Uganda, to the natural beauty of national parks such as Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Natron, the Serengeti and Mt. 2008 Smile with Centro Photography CompetitionFor the 2nd year running, I have been selected as a local finalist in the Smile with Centro portrait photography competition. As one of 20 local finalists, I am now in the running to win a Sony digital camera and printer for best local photo and also the national first prize of $10,000.
My entry, cheekily entitled 'Bums', will be on display at Centro Lansell, Bendigo, From Monday the 15th of September until Friday 3rd of October. You can view my selected entry here.
The local and national winner will be announced on the 3rd of October.

SEMI FINALIST - 2008 SHELL WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR AWARDSix of my entries made it into the semi final stages of this years Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
The competition, which is held annually and owned by the Natural History Museum, London and the BBC Wildlife Magazine, showcases the very best in photography of natural subjects and attracts thousands of entries worldwide.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London in October.

Philip Martins | Photography - WINNER of Best Local Photo in the 2008 'Smile with Centro' Photography Competition
Philip's entry into the 2008 'Smile with Centro' photography competition entitled 'Wrapped Up' has been awarded Best Local Photo at Centro Lansell, Bendigo. Philip's entry was selected ahead of 19 other finalists to win a Sony Cyber-Shot Digital Camera and Printer prize valued at $1,000.
As one of the Best Local Photo winners, his entry was then judged along side the Best Local Photo winners from 58 Centro Shopping Centres around Australia for the National 1st Prize of $10,000.
Unfortunatley on this occasion, Philip's entry came up short for National 1st Prize but he is extremely excited to have been awarded one of the Best Local Photo's and to have his image recognised in this Australia wide photography competition.
If you live in the Bendigo region, you can view Philip's winning entry which will be on display at Centro Lansell, Bendigo until Friday 31st of August. If you are unable to get down to see in the winning image in print, you can view it by clicking here. His winning image was taken in the Reserva Nacional Pacaya Samiria in the Peruvian Amazon as part of his photographic expedition to South America last year.

Photographic Award Nomination for Philip Martins PhotographyPhilip has been selected as a finalist in the 2007 'Smile with Centro' photography competition for his entry entitled 'Wrapped Up'. The image was taken in the Reserva Nacional Pacaya Samiria in the Peruvian Amazon on his recent photographic trip to South America.
As one of 20 local finalists, his image with be exhibited at Centro Lansell Shopping centre in Bendigo from the 13th to 31st of August and he is in the running for the Best Local Photo Prize as well as the National 1st Prize of $10,000. The winner is to be announced on August 24th.
The 'Smile with Centro' Photography competition is an annual event and this year attracted over 37,000 entries from all over Australia with the theme being 'what makes you smile'.

NEW PHOTOS UPLOADED - BRAZIL AND PERUI have completed the first round of processing of my images taken from South America and they are now online for viewing. To make the viewing of these images even more enjoyable, I have divided the portfolio's up by various locations within each of the different countries in both the Signature Series and Travel Portfolio galleries. The new images represent part of the 15,000 photographs I took on my 5 month journey and capture the heart and spirit of two of South America's most diverse and colourful countries, Brazil and Peru.

IMAGES FROM SOUTH AMERICAI am currently processing my images from my South America photographic expedition and hope to have these on display in various galleries within the Travel Portfolio and Signature Series Collection very soon.
With almost 15,000 images taken, the processing phase is very time consuming exercise as it entails checking every image taken for clarity, sharpness, colour balance and tonal values, as well and scanning for and removing any unwanted dust spots to ensure that the final image is a true reflection of that particular moment.

SOUTH AMERICA PHOTO EXPEDITIONMy five month photographic trip to South America is almost at its end! The trip has taken me from the Amazon jungle in Brazil and Peru down to Patagonia in Argentina and Chile, and everything in between!
Over the next couple of months I will begin the processing of my images, so keep an eye out for these to appear on my website at some stage in early 2007.

September´s edition of Backpacker Magazine has published my photo essay depicting a selection of of images from Connemara on Ireland´s west coast. The article, entitled ´Connemara and Ireland´s Wild West´ also displays some of my photographs from the island of Inishbofin and the stunning Renvyle Peninsula.

NEW PHOTOS ADDED - RIGA, LATVIA
I have added my latest photos taken from recent field trip to the Latvian capital of Riga. Immersed in history, Riga's colourful old town architecture, cobbled streets and squares and medieval churchs and cathedrals provided the perfect place to capture some striking photographs.
This was my second visit to the Baltic Sea capital and the new images, Reference ID's BAL 009 to BAL 054 can be viewed the in the Travel Portfolio section within the Baltics Gallery.

I have completed the processing of my stock of images taken on a recent two week photographic trip to the North African country of Tunisia and have added a new Signature Series gallery and Travel Portfolio gallery representing a selection of some 2,500 images.Tunisia is a country rich in culture and history, not to mention scenery, all of which made for some amazing landscape and portrait shots. From the colourful coastal towns of the north, to the sand swept region of the Grand Erg Oriental and Sahara Desert, to the dry arid expanse of the Ksour district (Star Wars territory) and mountain region bordering Algeria in the south, each image captures a glimpse of everyday life in one of the Arab world's most fascinating countries.

Entitled, 'Crossing Australian Plains on a Push Bike', the essay portrays some of the fabulous scenes he captured through his lens on his recent 73 day, 5,500km cycling trip across Australia, including crossing the Nullarbor Plain.
